Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the S Martin Hotel on our recent trip to Italy; it was such a beautiful and eclectic experience we decided to stay an extra night.
One of the best towns in the Puglia region, Giovinazzo’s charm and history sets this gem of a hotel in a class above all others. It is a historical building that dates back to the towns beginning set just behind the wall of the open Adriatic. An old convent transformed into a boutique hotel filled with intriguing archeological fragments around every corner, it felt like staying in a museum while achieving a modern hotel setting. Great views of the town and ocean on its rooftop that often had live music and cocktails at dusk. The entire staff went out of their way to aid in all of our needs. The open courtyard where breakfast and dinner was served was an experience in itself.
We look forward to returning to this hotel many more times.

Stunning hotel in the seaside town of Giovinnazo. Beautiful building with lovely outdoor areas and sea views. Rooms are great and breakfast was excellent. Train station is 15 mins walk from hotel with good connections to Bari and north to Foggia.

We chose the hotel San Martin Hotel for 2 reasons, firstly the reviews of previous guests and secondly its geographical location. We went with high expectations but these were not meet.
It started badly when the pre booked airport to hotel transfer failed to arrive. Contact with the hotel failed to resolve the problem and we were left having to find a way to the hotel using public transport. So instead of a 20 minute transfer we were on buses, trains and finally our feet for about 3.5 hours.
On arrival in Giovinazzo we asked about getting a taxi to the hotel but the town has no taxi services! A passer by heard us enquiring and on our behalf he phoned the hotel and asked them to send a car, we waited for 15-20 minutes but no car appeared. So began a long walk to the hotel. On our arrival we were met by a most apologetic young man but this did not improve our humour.
Things continued to deteriorate. The pictures of the roof garden and various terraces were delightful but the reality was less so! The roof garden looked as though a bomb had hit it, with piles of stones scattered all around, and what might once have been a canopy, in shreds. The solarium furniture was in a distressed looking state and cushions for them were nowhere to be seen and neither were the picturesque parasols! We found a terrace adjoining the reading room, also with a distressed looking sofa but with cushions stored in the reading room, alas the cushions were dirty with evidence of bird droppings on them. In the reading room itself there were some blue chair but they were covered in dust.
The continental breakfast was adequate with a variety of items but it hardly varied throughout the week. (One morning my wife had to cover the sliced melon to keep the flies off).
The hotel building itself could not be more different to those found in hotel "chains" and I thought this was a pleasant change. Unfortunately my wife was not as impressed as she thought it was like sleeping in a museum!
On checking out I was told that the cost for our stay was 630€ but our booking confirmation showed it was 770€. I queried this (although I was seriously tempted not to) and showed the booking confirmation e mail. Suddenly 770€ was the correct price!
We wondered whether the hotel is more often used by guests just for a day or two and that guests staying for a week are something of an exception .We would have expected that after 2 or 3 days seeing us appear at breakfast my daily cappuccino order and the cold milk for my wife's cup of tea might just appear, but every day until our last breakfast they had to be ordered
Overall our impression was that of an unprofessional approach to the running of the hotel by a variety of young people.
For us it was an extremely disappointing stay.

Giovinazzo,is THE place to visit for us, a Norwegian family, who wants to get away from places full of tourists and experience a genuine small Italian village with a lot of local resturants with good Italian food. The hotel is a historical place, and old monastery, converted to a comfortable hotel with a spectacular view. We even had the roof terrace by our own most days with a fantastic and relaxing view to the Adriatic sea. The staff is service minded and very helpful. This is a great place to stay for all who want a relaxing time in a genuine small Italian village. Recommended by hart.

We booked San Martin Hotel in January 2014 for our August holiday. We arrived with our booking number and we were told that the Hotel was under new management and our booking did not exist as they had changed their email address and all previous bookings had not been transferred over to the new management. on hearing this we were very upset and disappointed as August is peak season and a very busy time in Giovinazzo.
Domenico was very helpful and after a quick phone call to the manager, a large family room was found for us.
Overall we found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful, breakfast was good.
This was our second stay and we would go back again.

This hotel was a real disappointment. We had a confirmation number that we received from our travel agent, who booked the hotel in May. When we were arrived we were told there was no reservation on our name in a very rude and mean way. We were told that the hotel became under new management in March. Even though our reservation was made in May, it disappeared. We got our travel agent on the phone and a disagreement ensued. We were also told that there was a big festival coming to town. The one kind thing that happened was that one of the other workers gave us some cappuccino and some cake. Other than that it was a very disorganized situation, and we left.

We were flying into Bari for a Puglia vacation. We decided to stay in Giovinazzo rather than Bari to avoid population centers and traffic. Giovinazzo is a beautiful small town on the water that also has a walled port and fortified town. The San Martin Hotel is a converted monastery inside the walls of the old town. The hotel is chock full nooks and crannies, and tranquil courtyards for relaxation. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and also arranged a hotel car to the airport.

A former monastery, and pittoresque too!
Did you ever hear of Giovinazzo, south of Barletta and north of Bari, on the shores of the Adriatic? The neighbours, Barletta and Bari, have their qualities (especially if you are interested in the castles of Frederick II and the life and miracles of St. Nicolas from Myra), but the real gem is Giovinazzo, with its precious old town, wonderful Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and spectacular harbour and seaside views. The old city center is small, but every corner, every building, is a feast for the eye. It's pittoresque - let's say that, and hardly anybody knows about it. If you go there, the former monastery of St. Martin (eleventh century) is the place to be. Right on the seaside, it's a stylish hotel with an interior of passages, corridors, balconies and a courtyard where the nuns used to contemplate on life, death, and maybe what's for dinner tonight. The rooms and suites are brilliant, tastefully decorated, well done and well kept; the staff is very helpful; they have an astonishing roof terrace; and they prepare an excellent breakfast. In summer you are grateful to architects and monastery builders who gave a thought to coolness and intimacy in a characterful atmosphere. No restaurant (but there are plenty around, and good ones too), no swimming pool (but you just plunge in the sea), and yet a great experience, worth all five stars. Never heard of Giovinazzo? That's where St. Martin is! - Anton Brand & George Mulder

I urge all travellers to give this dark, dank and just plain creepy hotel a miss. My husband and I booked a room in this hotel for 7 nights during the "Festival of Madonna" in August. We lasted only 2.
Location is about the only thing this hotel has going for it as it's situated in Giovinazzo's beautiful coastal "old town". When it came to everything else, this hotel really took the biscuit.
Upon arriving at the hotel, late in the evening after a long flight, my husband and I were greeted with a grunt. After checking in we took the world's slowest elevator (which I was to soon find out only worked half the time) up to our third floor room, which was so small you couldn't even swing a cat. The shower was dirty and there was no toilet paper. When I asked for some I was given two rolls and told that should be enough for the entire stay. I laughed thinking the housekeeper was joking. He wasn't.
Breakfast however WAS a joke (by the way, stale croissants DO NOT a breakfast make!). My husband asked for some milk to have on our cereal, as the main table had run out, and was given the smallest jug, half filled, barely enough for himself. When he asked for some more for me, it was like a scene out of Oliver Twist. This behaviour from the manager, no less.
This same manager we saw later in the day, yelling at a couple at the front desk in full view of staff and other guests. The poor woman he was towering over was in tears and the gentleman with her looked like he was doing everything he could to stop himself commiting a murder. Wouldn't blame him. This I found absolutely appalling behaviour.
My husband and I immediately set out to find altenative accommodation. We stayed the second night (out of necessity rather than choice ) and informed the manager the next morning that we would be making an early departure. Well, did he launch an attack!! My husband and I were so truly disgusted that when he overcharged us for our stay we couldn't even be bothered arguing, we were so desperate to get out of there.
The manager even had the audacity to tell us we should be ashamed, as we were the third couple in as many days to up and leave early before our booked departure date. If this clown had half a brain he'd put two and two together and realise there was a pattern emerging for a reason!
Anyway, we booked an apartment at the Riva Del Sole which had a full kitchen, lounge room, balcony and was beachfront for less than the S. Martin. It had a huge pool, lovely restaurant, pizza bar and it's own lido and the hotel staff were AMAZING! The manager in particular was an absolute gentleman. The hotel is located just outside of town so they offer a free shuttle into and out of the main square and Bari airport which I thought was fantastic.
The S. Martin needs to clean up its act, and it could start by taking a leaf out of Riva Del Sole's book.

Dear Guest many times I've seen your post and at last I couldn't stay still without giving you some news about the S.Martin. Since January 2010, ADRIAGEST, a company (that I own) took over the managing dirrction of this wonderful hotel. It has been a hard job to renew... first the image and the dignity this hotel deserves. Ater these years I can truly say many things have changed so please take a look to our new site (www.smartinhotel.i) and check it out I'm sure you will appreciate. At last I really look forward you will be our guest again whenever you'll plan a next trip to southern Italy. Stefano Romanazzi Managing Director ADRIAGEST S.Martin Hotel
