I have made the annual pilgrimage to la Higuera, Los Corrales, Orgiva since it's inception. It is my spiritual home, the place where I can relax and restore my inner peace. A morning stroll into Orgiva for a breakfast of coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice and tostadas con tomate, dawn walking in La Taha in the high Alpujarras, an authentic rustic meal in a village restaurant, cooking for family and friends in the evening, are just a few of the things I love. Why am I not there now? This is the only place I can go to where I know all my children (young adults) will join me at the drop of a hat.
Stayed in la higuera for 2 weeks - one of the two cottages that share the stunning pool area and land at Los corrales. The 2 bedrooms are at opposite ends of the rustic building and there's a lovely living space/kitchen in between. As it was July, most time was spent outside in the gorgeous courtyard or by the pool, which is surrounded by lush tropical plants and comfortable wooden loungers. Lots of land to wander round and great views of the mountains. The owners and their pets (dogs, cats, chickens) were warm, friendly and welcoming, and there was lots to see and do in the area for ourselves and our teenage boys. A great, relaxing holiday. It's a downhill 15 min walk into the town of orgiva, either partly along a narrow footpath, which was a bit overgrown when we were there, or along a twisty road. There are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants in the town, which has a nice atmosphere, and theres a weekly market. It takes a bit longer walking back up, so best to drive in if carrying much shopping.…
Our family (two adults and two children, ages 7 and 12) recently spent almost a week in Orgiva at La Higuera. The cottage is quite spacious and well laid out in a welcoming curved shape with two bedrooms, one on either end of a large open space that holds a kitchen, eating area, and comfortable seating area. The owners live on site (which is extremely helpful) and it is evident they have put a great deal of thought into equipping the cottage for long-term visitors, especially families with children. The property provides endless play opportunities for kids, including a tree house, a trampoline, swings, and a pool (although that was closed for the season during our stay). The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking (not just boiling water and microwaving frozen dinners), which is not always the case with rental properties. This is probably because the owner is a trained chef; for a fee he will serve a restaurant-quality meal for guests in the cottage, something the whole family really enjoyed.…
La Higeura had everything we needed for a superb holiday. The cottage is situated on a small cortijo about 15 mins walk from Orgiva which has all services and a lot of cosmopolitan interest. The owners, Wes and Amanda Somerville live on site and couldn't have been more helpful; the welcome pack was especially appreciated after our long journey. We enjoyed the private patio and the peace of the cortijo surrounded by olive trees and tremendous views of the mountains. The property catches the sun all year and has a woodburning stove for the cooler times and is equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The walking and cycling in the surrounding mountains was superb and the Alpujarra villages have to be seen to be believed. This was our fifth, late autumn, visit to southern Spain in six years and definately one of the best. The November weather was just right, not cold but not too hot either; just right for walking and cycling. We were very comfortable at La Higuera and have come home with fond memories of a brilliant holiday.…
