Because I believed the reviews on TripAdvisor, I brought my brother and his wife to Asian City during a long airport layover yesterday evening when they were passing through Houston. I was trying to find a good restaurant near IAH because driving into downtown or...my Galleria area, would have taken too long in 4:30pm traffic and distance.
WOW, what a HUGE mistake I made...
Our 3 main seafood dishes were barely edible, partly due to being seriously BLAND and tasteless, and could not be salvaged with soy sauce. My entreé was HUNAN spicy Scallops, and even it was boring & bland. However, the WORST worse thing about all of our dishes was that the scallops and shrimp were severely overcooked and rubbery. The cook should be jailed for ruining such delicate seafood like this. Half of one scallop took 5 minutes to chew and there was a firm rubber muscle texture that made it difficult to swallow without choking. I’m wondering if the scallops were low quality, previously frozen, or came from a 3rd world country - besides being grossly overcooked.
My big brother, who can wolf down any food in huge quantities, looked miserable and finally proclaimed his dish to be the worst Chinese food he had ever had. And he lives in Alabama, for gosh sake! I felt awful for choosing this place, and still do now. We were there on a Monday from 5:30pm to 10pm. Maybe Monday is a day off for the main chef/cook and a busboy did the cooking.
The waiter was friendly, but we had to ask repeatedly for napkins and silverware. They brought me white rice when I asked for brown.
It was odd to me that he didn’t think to question why we were barely eating, and why we dumped all our food into 3 big containers... and only because my poor brother spent way over $100 on the drinks and 3 expensive seafood dishes. My fridge is now full of inedible expensive Chinese food. It makes me sick.
The ambiance is nice, so I’m giving this 2 stars for the fish tanks and good Blue Hawaiian cocktails.
NOTE: If you are reading this to find a good restaurant near IAH or in Humble which actually serves delish food, please go to Pappas Seafood. I saw their sign later on and could’ve cried that we didn’t go there.More
