Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle and was built in the 1300’s. This fort is not a palace and was built for war. It was attacked numerous times and was never captured (until it was surrendered to the Germans during World War II). The fort is located on the shoreline of Oslo Harbor, near the center of downtown Oslo. It is open all year from 6 AM – 9 PM and is free to enter. There are guided tours in the summer, but we were there in May, so we toured it on our own.

I toured this impressive medieval fortress with my wife on a Saturday afternoon in mid-May and really enjoyed it. Highlights of the fortress include the impressive ramparts and the Royal Mausoleum. Many Norwegian Kings and Queens are buried here. I also enjoyed walking through the World War II Resistance Museum that sits in a small building on the grounds of the Fort.

Overall, I enjoyed touring this impressive fort and recommend it. This is a must-see attraction when visiting Oslo.

The fortress overlooks the harbor and Oslo fjord. Nice views, not too hard a climb up stairs and walk around the grounds. Interesting museum of medieval life inside, in addition to a ghost story. Also on the grounds, an interesting museum of Norwegian resistance during WWII.

Not worth the walk if you can't get in. It's closed and you really can't get near enough to "get a feel" for the fortress.

Very easy to get there, a place for those who like history. It is a place for a walk and learn. Do not recommend using car to get there.
